There are two types of immunization: active and passive

Active Immunity:
immunity conferred by natural exposure to an infectious agent.
Depends on action of person's own lymphocytes and resulting memory
B cells
specific to that pathogen
Develop after immunization-vaccine
Passive Immunity:
immunity conferred by transferring antibodies from an individual who is immune to that infection to someone who is not.
Does not result from the actions of the recipients' cells
Depends on transferred antibodies poised to help destroy microbes for which they are specific to
Immediate protection
Stays as long as transferred antibodies last
